That is not always true:

If you create a custom subject like this:
custom_subject listname [list->sequence]

you'll receive

[mylist 1]

[mylist 2]Re:[mylist 1]

[mylist 3]Re:[mylist 2] Re:[mylist 1]

and so on.

Verified in 3.4.3.1.
