I prefer to put virus check in the SMTP setup
I have been using with success amavisd-new
(http://www.ijs.si/software/amavisd)
as a filter for postfix (but you can use it with any MTA), i used clamd
as an antivirus (clamav.elektrapro.com) and also added spamassassin
checks to amavisd-new.
The beauty of amavisd-new is that it integrates virus scanning and spam
control in a single daemon.
The only small problem is that it is a bit of a resource hog
btw if you are high traffic enable $sa_local_tests_only
or the first rbl that has dns problems will bite you.
