Well, I'm a real sympa newbie, but might be able to help...

1) The first time you log into the sympa interface using the email 
address in sympa.conf that is the owner, you need to have sympa 
create a password. This password will then be mailed to that address. 
If it doesn't make it to that address:
2) Make sure the sympa.pl program is running (ps -A)
3) Check the spool directories : /home/sympa/spool (esp outgoing) - 
are they empty? or is a message waiting? This suggests the sympa.pl 
isn't running
4) You can look at that message and get your password.
