For me this sounds as if sendmail has shutdown itself due to high
system load. Check your load average during the dilivery with the "uptime"
command. Also check your sendmail.cf for lines like that:

        # load average at which we just queue messages
        O QueueLA=12

        # load average at which we refuse connections
        O RefuseLA=18

If you are still using single letter options look for Ox and OX.
This options are designed to keep sendmail from eating all your
CPU time.
